Illuminated Qurʾan Section, Safavid Persia, 16th Century
Description
A section of the Qurʾan on burnished paper, copied in black naskh, eleven lines to the page, with sura headings in gold on a lapis ground. The opening bifolium is fully illuminated with fine floral arabesque. Later binding in blind-tooled leather.
Provenance
European private collection, acquired in Istanbul before 1960.
